Top 5 Parent Picks when visiting the College of Charleston:
The number one thing to do in Charleston is to enjoy the incredible restaurants. There are so many talented chefs and the culinary scene is something that truly sets Charleston apart from any other city. Plan either a Jazz/ bluegrass brunch at High Cotton or brunch at Poogan’s Porch. Reservations are a must! Another favorite is SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) for a Modern take on Southern food.
Drive a 1/2 hr outside of the city to visit Boone Hall Plantation which has a bit of everything. The plantation tours allow a choice of what guests prefer to see (the farmland, the house, the slave quarters, etc. ). This plantation was featured in Gone With the Wind (the oaks leading to Tara). Another plantation that’s smaller but offers a very interesting tour is Macleod Plantation on John’s Island.
Walk the city and explore the Battery, Market Street and King St. (Best shopping is on King St). Upper King is where the nightclubs and nightlife can be found.
In the city itself, for a bit of history, tour The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. It takes an hour or a bit more, but it’s interesting. Another excursion is to drive over the famous Ravenel Bridge to Patriot’s Point Naval and Maritime Museum. Fort Moultrie is also accessible via a short boat ride.
Depending on the time of year, watch the Charleston Cougars men’s basketball team. They play just steps away from Campus. Or take in a Charleston River Dogs baseball game. Bill Murray is an owner of the team and can often be seen at the games.
Charleston is very bike friendly, but a U lock is essential.
