What child would not want to spend time with their parents walking the streets to find the best ice cream parlor in town? My daughter, Megan, and her friend Mackenna organized a day of taste testing in NYC. Mackenna’s mom, Margaret Asselin Woods, is the Founder of Lickt, our Chef profile in June. Our list was aggressive but let’s face it, there are worse things we could be doing on a sunny afternoon than our market research for our Sweet Travels community.
First stop was Melt Bakery pop-up stand at Broadway Bites. The red velvet ice cream sandwich was more like an ice cream filled cake; light, airy and incredibly moist.
Walking south to East 10th, Sundaes and Cones was next on our list. Mackenna ordered the corn ice cream and Megan went for chocolate chip. Corn was a pleasant surprise but I loved the rich chocolate flakes incorporated into the light vanilla base of the chocolate chip. The ice cream cakes are definitely worth going back for if you have a special occasion.
The crêpe cake at ChikaLicious Dessert Bar was stacked with crêpes and thin layers of vanilla cream. The crunchy caramel glaze reminded us of creme brûlée. This will be a recurring stop for us in NYC!
On a role, we walked steadily to Snowdays right down the street. We ordered the popular cookies and cream with a drizzle of caramel topped with strawberries. Although a bit sweet, the ice cream was light with a hint of blueberries. The girls heard about the spoons that change colors based on temperature but unfortunately they were out when we arrived. Guess we have to try again next time!
Davey’s Ice Cream on 1st Avenue is another favorite of mine. The staff encouraged us to try many samples before ordering. Never before have I heard of toasted jam ice cream. The subtle toasted bread flavor with a swirl of strawberry shocked and delighted our taste buds. Speculoos chocolate chip is my go to flavor.
Our last stop, Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, had a line out the door. After trying this ice cream a couple years back and falling in love with it, we decided to treat Mackenna and her mom to this ice cream cult destination. The salted chocolate and salted caramel pretzel did not disappoint.
