I met Margaret Asselin Woods one Saturday afternoon at her retail store in Maplewood, New Jersey to find out more about Lickt Gelato and OK I admit it, maybe sample a flavor or two! Margaret combined her love of food with science from an early age majoring in Food Science in college. Straight after college, she drove east to work for M&M/Mars in Product Development and after many years, switched over to Marketing where she was responsible for Dove Chocolate. Twenty-three years later, Margaret decided to follow her passion and Lickt Gelato was born. Why gelato? “Because it’s better for you than ice cream since it’s made with whole milk primarily and who wouldn’t love to taste gelato everyday! It’s a happy food!”
After 5 years,LuAnne Kleppe and Bonnie Czukoski joined Margaret at Lickt and they all three jointly run the business now. First and foremost, these partners are moms who have a passion for producing delicious products from scratch using fresh seasonal relevant ingredients. Lickt quickly became recognized in the business for creating interesting flavors. Not only do they sell their gelato and sorbet at the retail store located at 411 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, New Jersey (hours are limited so like them on Facebook to get the latest news regarding opening hours, events and daily flavors) but you can also find their gelato and sorbet at specialty gourmet stores and restaurants in the New Jersey area.
In between sampling salted caramel, lemon ricotta cheesecake, cran pome lime, cantaloupe, and sweet beet, Margaret gave me the inside scoops on her favorite sweets and a recipe to share. Enjoy!
What is your favorite dessert?
I really do not discriminate – as long as it’s warm out of the oven and served with a big scoop of gelato/ice cream!
What Marketing skills from Mars did you bring to Lickt Gelato?
At Mars we always lived by 5 principles. After 23 years these principles are the foundation of everything I do everyday – Quality, Mutuality, Efficiency, Responsibility, Freedom.
Describe the most challenging customer order and why?
No one is cranky or challenging when they order gelato, it’s a happy food.
Who influenced you the most in your career?
My mom – she was amazing an a role model like no other. She never really worked outside of the home so from the moment I started my career immediately following college she was my biggest supporter.
What is your favorite gelato/sorbet and drink pairing?
A scoop of our cran pome lime sorbet topped off with something alcoholic and bubbly with a drizzle of vodka lacing the top.
For your last dinner, what would you order?
Bolognese – there is nothing more comforting.
At home, what is your go-to meal?
I am really into pizza on the grill and my favorite is topped with thinly sliced zucchini, fresh corn off the cob, fresh sliced mozzarella with a sprinkling of rosemary garlic salt and a drizzle of hot chili oil.
What is your favorite restaurant?
Johannes in Amsterdam. Their talent in flavor/texture combinations are awe inspiring.
Describe Lickt Gelato in 5 words?
Seasonally relevant hand crafted gelato
What is the most popular Lickt flavor?
Salted Caramel – it’s our signature flavor.
Do you have a recipe to share?
Right now I am big on Pavola’s – So easy, fresh, light, decadent and multi textural…Make a stiff peak meringue shape into 3 disks – 8 inch or so and bake as directed. Prior to serving, layer the meringue disks with fresh cut fruit (I love the trio of strawberry, raspberry, blueberry. If you are feeling adventurous add some fresh chopped mint or basil). Top with fresh whipped cream and repeat. Finish off with fresh fruit and a sprig of basil. Serve immediately.
