It all started one sunny semi-warm morning in March on a Friday when I had a sweet craving to visit several of my favorite bakeries and ice cream cafes in New York City. I started at West 23rd and Ninth at Sullivan Street Bakery. Their signature Bomboloni, an Italian doughnut with house-made vanilla or chocolate cream is light, creamy and not too filling. If you are in the mood for fruit, try the jam filled Bombolini
Next up was Billy’s Bakery for a dozen mini cupcakes to bring home. During my travels I always like to pick up a couple of desserts for my discerning taste testers at home who critique each sample to find the perfect moist cake, creamy but light frosting, or airy croissant. Red Velvet and German Chocolate are our favorite cupcakes and the Oreo Ice Box or Chocolate Cake with vanilla frosting are tied for first in terms of cakes.
La Bergamote is a spot not to miss. I absolutely love their chocolate almond croissants. The fruit tarts are beautifully prepared and taste as good as they look…which does not happen often!
La Bergomote just opened “La Bergomote Market” down the street from the bakery. A perfect store to shop for your favorite french jam, foie gras, cookies, tea, or my favorite treat, Griottines, raspberries soaked in liquer.
Another item I picked up were a couple of “chic shots”…high quality spices in small containers. The French are always so creative in their packaging of products.
I had never tried a merveilleux before I visited the french shop, Aux Merveilleux de Fred. I know they may remind you of Hostess Sno Balls, but do not be fooled. They were heavenly but the sugar cramique is what will bring be back time and time again to Aux Merveilleux de Fred.
Milk and Cookies Bakery was next. You can smell the fresh baked cookies from down the street. I love the fact you can buy your own dough and no one has to know!
Cones Ice Cream Artisans located at 272 Bleecker Street was next on my list. I have been by this Argentinian shop many times but it has always been closed. It opens at 1:00 pm so plan accordingly as you will not be disappointed with the exotic choices of gelato and ice cream offered. The mint chocolate and grapefruit were two of my favorites.
Walking east on Bleecker, Bisous Ciao, was packed with people indulging in the colorful macarons.
The chocolate sea salt caramel cupcakes at Molly’s Cupcakes are out of this world! Grab a swing at the counter or play a board game at a table. This was the perfect place to rest my weary feet after a long day of walking for sweets.
